Chapter 1: The Frustration That Started the Journey

Chapter 2: Choosing a Distribution & The First Year
The switch to Linux began with Linux Mint—a polished and well-regarded operating system. However, the desire for more up-to-date kernel and software packages soon emerged, leading to a move to Fedora. Fedora offers a balanced approach, providing access to newer software while maintaining stability—not as bleeding-edge as Arch, but comfortably on that side of the spectrum.
Since that initial transition, all of this employee’s content creation has been done on a Linux desktop. DaVinci Resolve provides excellent Linux support, and even with an NVIDIA GPU (often cited as problematic), no significant issues have been encountered.
Over the past year, the experience has been remarkably boring and reliable—and that is meant as a high compliment. Linux has simply performed as a computer should: editing video, processing photos, recording audio, capturing screens, playing games, managing spreadsheets, sending email, and browsing the internet. It has not introduced more technical difficulties than Windows; in fact, fewer have been encountered.
Windows 11, in contrast, has presented more glitches than earlier versions—programs creating desktop icons unexpectedly, odd system behaviors, and even a virus infection on a Windows laptop. Linux, on the other hand, has remained drama-free.
Chapter 3: The Biggest Shift – Control and Privacy
The most significant change has been internal. This employee now has the peace of mind that their computer is not data-mining them, not spying on their activity, and not overriding settings to push unwanted features. There are no ads in the start menu, no forced AI assistants, and no “telemetry” secretly reporting usage back to a corporation.
If an update is not desired, it is not forced. The system can be configured exactly as wished, and it stays that way. Windows is still used on a Microsoft Surface laptop, primarily because driver support for that specific hardware is not yet complete on Linux. However, running Linux full-time has provided a new perspective on the difficulties routinely tolerated in Windows.
Many have grown so accustomed to Windows’ quirks that they no longer see them as problems. When a novel issue appears on Linux, however, it is sometimes interpreted as a fundamental flaw of the platform—a cognitive bias worth acknowledging.
For instance, reinstalling Windows is a laborious process: locating the correct ISO, managing product keys, dealing with activation servers, and navigating recovery media. Recently, after a virus infection, reinstalling the Surface took over two days to resolve. By contrast, installing Linux is fast and straightforward—download the image, write it to media, install, and it is done. No activation keys, no license hassles, no hidden hurdles.
Linux has its own quirks, but they are no more onerous than Windows’ quirks. In fact, Linux reboots are far less frequent than Windows reboots—a point that this employee emphasizes as a notable productivity gain.
Chapter 5: The Command Line – Not as Scary as You Think
One of the most common fears about Linux is the command line. Many assume they will be forced to edit configuration files and type arcane commands constantly. In reality, the vast majority of tasks can be accomplished through a graphical user interface (GUI).
The terminal is occasionally used, but that is because it has become comfortable—and sometimes it is simply faster than navigating through menus. However, this is not fundamentally different from Windows, where users sometimes edit registry keys or group policies to achieve certain settings.
The perception that Linux is “archaic” in this regard is largely a legacy issue. Many tutorials are written by long-time users who are accustomed to the command line, and they share what they know. But modern desktop environments on Linux offer perfectly capable GUI tools for almost everything. Tutorials and expectations need to be updated accordingly—something our employee strongly advocates for.
Chapter 6: Gaming – A Remarkable Turnaround
Gaming support on Linux has improved dramatically over the past few years. Thanks to Steam Proton and other compatibility layers, the vast majority of Windows games now run flawlessly on Linux—often on day one.
When our employee reviewed the top PC games on Metacritic for 2025, every single one ran on Linux, with most working out of the box. Performance is typically within 5% of Windows, and the gap is closing rapidly. The only notable exception is competitive multiplayer, where developers intentionally disable Linux support due to anti-cheat concerns. This is not a technical limitation but a policy decision.
For single-player and cooperative games, Linux is now a perfectly viable gaming platform—a fact that has completely changed the employee’s computing habits.

On the other hand, RAW photo editing is now fully functional on Linux thanks to tools like Darktable, and video editing continues to be a strength.
Chapter 8: The Long-Term Advantage – Linux Gets Better Over Time
One of the most compelling aspects of Linux, in this employee’s view, is that it has no incentive to work against its users. There are no quarterly earnings reports dictating feature changes, no advertising partnerships forcing unwanted integrations, and no data-collection mandates.
All incentives are aligned toward making the system better, more reliable, and more user-friendly. As the user base grows (currently estimated at 2–5% of desktop users), more companies are paying attention. DaVinci Resolve already offers a native Linux version, and it is anticipated that other commercial software vendors will follow.
Our employee has even reached out to Affinity (a competitor to Adobe) to encourage them to consider Linux support. Their perpetual-license model and quality software would be a significant draw for creative professionals on the platform.
